Chapter 27

Lucky woke Liam up by stretching out next to his head and purring like a small engine. One paw swatted at his ear, and he rolled over and gave the cat’s head a rub. “Food bowl empty, or you just being annoying?” The cat meowed and jumped off the bed, tail flicking as she landed on the floor. Liam took a moment to focus on the pale lemony sunlight pouring though the slats of the half-open blind. It was going on 6:00 a.m. The Petrie murders final forensics report was promised for today, although they already knew the highlights. Thorburn and the officer were continuing the door-to-door sweep, and he’d catch up to them once the morning update with Quade was over. He’d have to try reaching out to Katherine Fielding again before setting out for Ashton. Her silence had become irksome. The day held no end of tasks to get through. Hopefully, the team would make some headway before nightfall.

He showered and dressed in black slacks, black turtleneck, and tan jacket. Lucky sat in his lap while he ate a bagel and drank a cup of coffee in the living room. He’d been gone a lot of late, and she seemed starved for affection, even though Hannah had been bringing his nephews over late afternoons to feed and play with her. “I won’t be keeping these overtime hours much longer, little friend,” he said, giving her back one last rub. “Guard the castle and stay out of trouble.”

Yesterday’s rain had stopped, but swollen clouds lingered like a woollen blanket over the city. The streets were slick with leftover precipitation, and puddles filled low-lying sections of the road and pathways. Liam deviated from his route to visit a Tim Hortons drive-through for a large coffee and egg sandwich that he ate before getting back into traffic. The bagel earlier hadn’t filled him. Even with the stop, he was first into the office and had a chance to review the night’s reports while he waited for Quade. Auger was next in and stopped at his desk on the way by.

“Hear the news? Greta’s decided to move back home to Regina. She’s accepted a job leading their community outreach program. Means her current post will be up for grabs.”

Liam waited a few beats. “You applying?”

“Sure, nothing to lose. How about you?”

“I’m happy where I am.”

“Guess Quade and I will be duking it out then, that is if she wants to make her acting permanent.” He lifted his hands and feigned a couple of jabs. “Being a Black woman gives her a big advantage, political correctness being what it is these days, but I have more experience.” Auger gave an exaggerated shrug. “Hopefully, what’s best for the team will win the day.”

“I’m certain the competition will be fair.” Liam watched Auger saunter over to his desk and tried not to think the worst of the man. He wore his ambition like an oversized coat that hid whatever good was going on underneath.
